Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft and Oracle are transforming their balance sheets to fund an AI-driven data centre build-out, with combined capex projected to rise from USD261bn in 2024 to nearly USD1trn by 2029. To fund this, the hyperscalers have turned to bond markets at scale, creating a new and rapidly growing source of leverage over their electricity and energy choices.

There are signs of strain. The large supply may be hitting investor demand, with reports of weakness. Our research has focused on analysing the different policies in place, where energy strategy may impact risks for bondholders. Going further, bondholders can use their capital to impact that energy strategy. Renewable investment can both lower lender risk and cap the emissions tied to growing energy usage for AI.

This note examines the recent surge in hyperscaler bond issuance, how it is reshaping investor portfolio exposure, and how each company's approach to clean energy procurement could differentiate both emissions outcomes and credit risk.
